Overview

BIG LIFE: A Poetic Memoir Complete with Fiction OR "?send my roots rain" ackowledges that memoir, memory, is often wrapped in fiction. Anyone raised Catholic in the pre-Vatican II version and then launched into the post-Vatican II reality with a Jesuit twist has plenty of conflict to reconcile and, if lucky, a long odyssey toward a faith and an acceptance of the grace that is all around. By the time the Stones sang, " . . . and who killed the Kennedy's / when after all it was you and me . . ." the sun often shone at midnight and each new Dylan album offered road maps for the soul. Mine has been a rich time to be in this broken, loving world. The battle to believe and nurture a doubting faith is at the core of this story. Not to mention catching a buzz and taming a princely ego. Poems are concise fictions: the speaker is not the poet; the poem is not the poet. In the following poems, little worlds are crafted: candles and search lights try to illuminate six plus decades of tribal existence.
