Overview
First published in 1901, this novel by the great Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler deals with a young widowed woman, who, following the lead of what she believes to be her friend's behavior, travels to Vienna and undertakes an affair with a great violinist whom she had know in her unmarried years. Becoming a "liberated woman" of sorts, she suddenly must deal with the consequences of her behavior, her lover's refusal to continue the relationship, and the societal pressures of the time.
