Overview

Abel and his family were more than startled when his quiet, spinster daughter Martha announces her intention of going to the Crimea to work among the British soldiers and their families. Money was needed for food and medicines and the family rallies round to raise enough to send Martha to Scutari. There she not only encounters Miss Nightingale, but also Alexander Laurence, a surgeon she had first met in a London ballroom but grows to love amidst the horrors of war.
