CoBrA is one of the most importantartist groups of Art Informel. The name is derived from the firstletters of the three capital cities of Copenhagen, Brussels, andAmsterdam -- the centers from which the CoBrA artists took action. Littleis still known here in Germany about the concrete origins of the artmovement. The exhibition and catalogue of the same name attempts a broadexamination of the group's origins: with the focus on thereconstruction of the movement prior to its official establishment inNovember 1948. It aims to present a representative cross-section of themovement that includes the largest possible number of artists as well asthe greatest possible concentration of forms of expression and topicscharacteristic of the movement. Roughly fifty paintings, thirtysculptural works, fifty graphic reproductions and photographs as well asindividual ceramics and textiles from international collections arepresented.

CoBrA gehört zu den wichtigstenKünstlergruppen des Informel. Der Name leitet sich aus denAnfangsbuchstaben der drei Hauptstädte Kopenhagen, Brüssel und Amsterdamab - die Zentren, von denen aus die CoBrA-Künstler/-innen agierten.Über die konkreten Anfänge der Kunstbewegung gibt es hierzulande nurwenig Kenntnis. Die Ausstellung und der gleichnamige Katalog versuchendie Anfänge breit angelegt zu untersuchen: Im Fokus steht dieRekonstruktion der Bewegung vor der offiziellen Gründung im November1948. Abgebildet werden soll ein repräsentativer Querschnitt derBewegung, der sowohl eine möglichst hohe Anzahl an Künstler/-innen alsauch eine möglichst hohe Dichte an für die Bewegung charakteristischenAusdrucksformen und Themenkreisen umfasst. Präsentiert werden etwa 50Gemälde, 30 skulpturale Arbeiten, 50 Grafiken und Fotografien sowieeinzelne Keramiken und Textilien aus internationalen Sammlungen.
