Overview
Mid-Victorian Glasgow gave a very respectable appearance, but all the usual undercurrents were there. The Reverend Aeneas McPhail, for instance. Strictly brought up by his widowed mother and his sister, and married late to a mousy bride, he finds his Highland blood stirring at the sight of the beautiful young wife of the elderly millionaire who has founded the parish church. And when the American Civil War brings ruin to the cotton industry, McPhail's clerk determines to fulfill a burning ambition by capitalizing on that misfortune.
