This work was undertaken on account of the value of star observations in determining azimuths, and the growing necessity of frequent observations for azimuth and for position in high-speed ships.

It was prepared in the Hydrographic Office in 1902 and reprinted in 1907 as a second edition. The present issue is a reprint of the second edition.
