She addresses both the practice of ruling within the regional 'microcosm of power' and the way local functionaries treated the applicants as well as the 'Ausreiser' (those who left) themselves, including their origins, socialization and cultural backgrounds, as well as their motives and their attitude towards their social surroundings. It shows that the applicants often included exactly those people who had so far led a perfectly well adapted life, the boundaries of which they no longer wanted to endure. The study develops a differentiated view of GDR society, where individuality and moral courage were certainly present despite the ubiquity of its security apparatus and closed borders. Sie betrachtet sowohl die Herrschaftspraxis im regionalen Mikrokosmos der Macht und den Umgang der lokalen Funktionare mit den Antragstellern als auch die Ausreiser selbst, ihre Herkunft, Sozialisation und kulturellen Pragungen sowie ihre Motive und das Verhaltnis zu ihrem sozialen Umfeld. Dabei zeigt sich, dass unter den Antragstellern haufig gerade jene waren, die bis dahin ein durchaus angepasstes Leben gefuhrt hatten, dessen Grenzen sie nun nicht mehr ertragen wollten. Die Studie entfaltet eine differenzierte Sicht auf die DDR-Gesellschaft, in der trotz Allgegenwart der Sicherheitsapparate und geschlossener Grenzen auch Eigensinn und Zivilcourage praktiziert wurden.
