Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. have remarked, that when Mr. Godfrey was at home, he waived his independence iu favour of Mrs. Godfrey; but this was always done upon the condition that he should be allowed to believe he didn't do it. In other words, a little management (which nobody understood better or practised more adroitly than Mrs. Godfrey, ) was necessary; the effect of which management was, that while he protested against doing any thing but what he liked, he hardly ever did any thing but what she liked. Men, says the poet, should be taught, as though you taught them not. Mrs. Godfrey's favourite reading of this line was, that men should be ruled as though you ruled them not; thus converting it into a practical maxim of unspeakable value in adjusting the relative authority of man and wife. Verily, that man is a fool who fancies he is a match for a woman in these things. The horse that obeys so gently the rein and bit, might as well fancy (if horses ever fancy anything, ) he trots along at his own pleasure, as a man with the marriage-bit in his mouth, that he is neither led nor driven. From what we have hinted above, however, the reader will easily conclude that Mr. Godfrey was to be led, riot driven; but a led horse will sometimes require patting on the neck, and a coaxing word or two, and so did Mr. Godfrey. Moreover, when he had a particular wish to select his own path, he was in the habit of going a great way round about, in order to arrive at the precise point from which he wanted to start. It was necessary to explain these little family matters, to account for the interval.ofnearly a month before Mrs. Wilson heard from him, after his friend had announced that Arthur only waited his summons to set out for Stratford.
