No sooner had Arthur been beaten into his bed-room, in the way we have described, than his resolution was distinctly formed. He would attempt his escape that very night, whatever might be the hazards of the enterprise; and having made this decision he never opened the book that contained his task, but sate on the bed, watching the waning candle, and listening eagerly for the successive sounds that betokened the gradual retirement of the household. We have said that there were marks of tears upon his cheeks; but not for his own sufferings or maltreatment had he been weeping, his indignation against tyranny and wrong having inspired himwith a fortitude which, boy as he was, disdained the weakness of tears. No?he had wept for the injustice and cruelty exercised upon War- dour?upon the only friend he had in the whole school, and whom, perhaps, he might never see again. Even in this imminent and most anxious crisis of his own fate, he could not advert to their sudden separation, for he had become deeply attached to him, without an emotion which was betrayed by the occasional falling of a fresh and unconscious drop upon his clasped hands. It was past ten o'clock, and as he thus sate earnestly listening, his senses became quickened to such a painful intensity, that even the faintest sound seemed to fall upon his beating heart as well as upon his ear. The fastening of every shutter, the locking of every door, the tone of every voice, the fall of every foot, however slight the echoes they awakened, became loud and breath-suspending noises that registered themselves by so many distinct and thrilling blows.
