Overview

Labels used for different generations-notably baby boomers, generation X, and millennial-have gained traction and permeated public discourse with frequent reference in the popular press, business advice, and even research on workplace values and attitudes. The workforce has experienced an increase in age diversity, with groups of young workers aged 16-34, middle-aged workers aged 35-54, and older workers aged 55 and up each representing about one third of the U.S. workforce today. This increasing age diversity in the last twenty years has created tensions in the workplace and is a likely contributor to discussions about generational differences and how these differences can be managed. The idea that workers can be categorized and understood by distinct sets of generational attributes has been become commonplace, and there are a myriad of resources offering advice on the multi-generational workforce. However, is this focus on characterizing workers by their generations warranted? Are there really fundamental similarities within a generation of workers that impact how they act and interact in the workplace? is each new generation of workers really that different from previous ones? Or are the perceived differences among generations simply a reflection of all people adapting to a changing workplace? Are Generational Categories Meaningful Distinctions for Workforce Management? (2020) examines whether this focus on generational characteristics is supported by research and whether it is useful in informing workforce management decisions. It outlines the concepts of age, period, and cohort effects which are foundational to understanding whether observed differences among workers can be attributed to generational differences. This report provides recommendations for employers in assessing their work environments, human capital, and personnel policies in order to guide management decisions. In addition, the report provides advice for improving research designs aimed at understanding changes in the workforce and work environments that affect worker behaviors. Book jacket.
