This book is unique in terms of its approach to analysing the consequences of shifts in bargaining powers between the major parties to a trans-boundary oil or gas pipeline. The case studies selected for this research provide practical examples of the main issues faced in piping oil or gas through one or more transit countries.

Given the increasing discoveries of hydrocarbons in more remote locations, the role of the pipeline in transporting these commodities to port or market through one or more transit countries is expected to increase. The implication is therefore of an increased role of the transit country in pipeline agreements. This research therefore provides fundamental insight into the determination of sustainable reward mechanisms for transit countries and the other major parties to the pipeline, which would serve to reduce the possibility of pipeline disruptions during operation.

The simple principles of bargaining method to understanding the role of the transit country in oil and gas pipeline agreements used in this study has not been taken before. Also, the development of a comprehensive mutual dependency solution is a new approach.
