Overview

The Wonderful World of Animals series focuses on the common characteristics of the major animal families. Its goal is to give children a broader understanding of similarities between animals that seem very different from each other at first glance, such as horses and cats. Basic concepts in biology and physiology are presented to help children recognize similar traits and features of animals of the same family. This excellent series is a complement to the more typical wildlife series whose volumes focus on single animals.

Amphibians vary enormously in size and shape. Some amphibians have long tails while others have none at all; some have four legs, some have two, while others have no legs at all. Unlike other vertebrates, which have hair, feathers, or scales to protect their bodies, amphibians have only bare skin.
