This young man of twenty-five, of medium height, with a well-proportioned figure, warm dark skin, chestnut hair and gray eyes; a broad forehead; a slightly aquiline nose, lips somewhat full, and white and regular teeth, was the only son of Don Antonio Bello, a rich planter of the South, associated in business with the Messrs. Anchorena who, owing to their immense fortune and their family and political relations with Rosas, enjoyed at this period high consideration in the Federal party. Don Antonio Bello, although himself a good Federal, had a profounder affection than that which he entertained for the Federation?his love for his son. His son was his pride, his idol, whom from a boy he had trained for theprofession of letters?to be a doctor, as the good man expressed it. At the period at which he is introduced to the reader Daniel was in the second year of his course of jurisprudence.
