Overview
The ghosts of two women haunt the streets of an empty London, seeking deliverance, to Heaven or Hell, through the relations they left behind with the living. At the same time, the husband of one of the women encounters an evil sorcerer, who duplicates himself into lifeless images and fabricates miracles to draw the souls of the living into darkness.
Widely regarded as Williams's greatest novel, All Hallows' Eve is a wildly imaginative work. Its beauties and terrors traverse such a broad range of spiritual states that The New York Times Book Review praised this "strange story" for its "poignant beauty such as prose fiction rarely achieves. The final impression is more as if the three books of the Divine Comedy had been compressed into one novel."
