Emilius and Eucrates were again friends, for the latter worthy, knowing his own interests, had speedily made some kind of apology for an outbreak of temper which might have produced serious results: whereupon milius immediately professed that he had been chiefly to blame, and so the matter ended. Indeed it was greatly to the advantage of Eucrates to be on good terms with yEmilius. Losses in commerce had clouded the declining days of his deceased father, and the establishment of his mother was partly supported by the beneficence of the wealthy Cornelius. Still, there was little affection between the youths, so different were their dispositions. One bright morning in October, yEmilius was pursuing his studies in the library of his father's villa; around him, in presses of cedar wood placed against the walls, were the works of the great historians and poets of Rome and Greece, written on rolls of parchment, or the Egyptian papyrus, each roll being labelled in bright red letters, with the title of the book andthe name of the author. Portraits of the most distinguished writers ornamented the room, while busts of Homer, Thucydides, and Demosthenes, confronting Virgil, Livy, and Cicero, surmounted the presses. But yEmilius was applying himself to the problems of Euclid, then, as now, part of a liberal education, and was striving in vain to thread the maze of lines and angles presented on the diagram.
