Though our subject tends as naturally to digression as main streets do to smaller ones, yet we are sorry to depart from it once more on a matter relating personally to ourselves. But circumstances having led us to speak of what we have undergone in behalf of the now reigning opinions in politics, and blushing (as we confess we did) to see how much we had said when our remarks came before us in print, yet in vindication of what we hope we may call our natural delicacy we have to observe--first, that we have ever been accustomed to "wear our heart on our sleeve;" secondly, that although the claims which we are thought to possess upon a considerate Administration have never before been publicly alluded to by ourselves, they have frequently been mooted in literary and political circles; thirdly, that a considerable and distinguished portion of the periodical press has advocated them, without distinction of parties (a circumstance of inexpressible comfort to us); and, lastly, that unless ill-health conspires with age to deceive us, time presses, and " the night cometh in which no man can work." At the same time, we beg the reader to understand, that we say all this in no whining or lamenting tone.
