IT is not of any importance to the Public to be made acquainted with the motives which have induced the Author to publifh. the following Sermon. He will only fay, that he had no fuch intention when he compofed and preached it. But there are two points on which, he doubts not, many readers will think, he ftands in need of an apology. Of them he begs a candid attention to what follows, as the beft that he fan offer. It may be faid, that little can be expected ?ie, efpecially in a fermon, on a fub- jedt which has now fo long engrofled the public attention, and engaged many able and ingenious writers on both fides. The Author readily admits the truth of this remark. If there be any thing here that can H 2 bebe called new it is the co'nfideration of- what our religion teaches to be the duty of Chriftians in circumftances like ours. This topic has not been touched, at leaft in any of thofe writings which he has read on the prefent controverfy. But though there be little or nothing new in the thoughts, every author has his peculiar manner and arrangement. One manner is better adapted to one fet of readers, another to another. If the fentiments then be juft, and if they be arranged and exprefled with tolerable per- fpicuity, it may be hoped that there are fome to whom they will be ufeful. The fecond point on which the author finds he muft apologize for himfelf, is his entering at all on fuch a fubjecT; in afermon. Indeed the prejudices of fome are fo ftrong on this article, that he fcarcely expects that any thing he has to advance will entirely remove them.
