Rental FAQ

Renting textbooks is a great option when you don’t want to spend too much and know you don’t need to keep the book. To rent a book, make sure to select the “Rent” option underneath the “Buy” section on the right side of the product page if presented. Nearly every textbook on our website is available to rent. Renting textbooks from will save you up to 90%. Due dates are shown at the time the rental order is placed.

Payment options

Because of the flexibility of rentals, a valid credit card must be associated with the order. While Store Credit can be applied to the rental transaction, Store Credit cannot be applied to the purchase of a rental item. Sales tax applies to all rentals.

Rental editions

You may receive a new, used or International Edition textbook based on availability. All used and international edition textbooks will be in acceptable rental condition, as determined by us. If you are not satisfied with the book you receive, you can return it for a refund within 30 days of the shipment date.

Supplemental materials

Rentals are intended for multiple uses. Therefore, textbooks are not guaranteed to come with usable supplements such as CDs or access codes. Many supplements are one time use items, and supplements may not be included with your rental.

If you receive a supplement with your rental, you are welcome to use it. However, supplementary materials that you may receive with your item must be returned with the book.

Tracking your rental shipment

Your tracking number will be emailed to you as soon as the package leaves our warehouse. Tracking information is also available in your account.

Take care of your rental

Rental textbooks are used multiple times. Because of this, we require that highlighting, writing, or note-taking in your books be very limited. Remember, another student will use the textbook after you return it.


You can extend the rental period at any time before your rental period expires for 10 days for $9.99 + tax. Simply log in to your account, view your rental order, and select “Extend.” You may opt for an extension at any time during your rental period, however please note that rentals can only be extended once. Your new due date will be sent to you via email and updated on your order page.

Extending one item does not extend all items on a rental order. Make sure to extend the rental period for each item that you need to keep longer than originally planned.

Buying your rental

If you would like to keep your book, you may convert your rental to a purchase at any time prior to your due date in your customer account. When purchasing a rented item, you will be charged 125% of the US Student Edition list price + tax minus the rental fee and any extensions purchased.

After you purchase an item, it is your property and the rental agreement is now void. Do not return rental products that were purchased as they will not be refunded nor sent back to you.

Returning a rental order for refund*

If you receive an incorrect item or damaged product due to our error, please contact customer care and to return the item within 30 days of shipment. You can also create the Return via your account. We do not issue a pre-paid shipping label for rentals being returned for a refund, and you will not receive a refund of the original shipping charges. No money is refunded for the return of a rental once 30 days from shipment have passed.

* Please note, this is different than returning your rental at the end of the rental period. Items returned within 30 days of delivery are for a refund. Items returned at the end of the rental period are not refunded.

Failure to return your rental

If your books are not postmarked by the due date, you will be charged a $9.99 extension fee + tax which extends your due date by 10 days. If your rental is not marked as in transit by the new due date, it will be automatically converted into a sale. You will be charged 125% of list price + tax less the fee paid for each item not returned. Available store credit will be utilized and the remaining cost will be charged to the credit card on file. This is not reversible. Please do not return any items that have converted into a sale as you will not receive a refund and the item will not be returned to you.

Damaged or lost books

Books must be returned in similar condition to when they were mailed. We request that highlighting or underlining is limited to keep the item in good, usable condition. Books that are heavily marked or otherwise damaged will not be accepted and you will be charged 125% of the US Student Edition list price minus the rental fee and any extensions purchased. Should you lose the book, you will be charged 125% of the US Student Edition list price + tax minus the rental fee and any extensions purchased. Please notify us within 30 days of the order to report an item that did not arrive or arrived damaged.

Returning your rental by the due date

Your due date is shown when you make the selection to rent an item, and is listed in your order confirmation and is also available in your customer account. A pre-paid return label will be automatically generated and emailed to you one week before your due date. If you would like to return your rental early, you may log in and create a return label at any time 30 days after the shipment. You may also create additional labels as necessary in your customer account. Make sure to review our packaging guidelines for tips on safe packaging. Please remember, when a book is rented, the rental price paid is only a percentage of the list price. When you return your rental, no money is refunded.

The term ‘postmarked’ means the date that the carrier website shows the item as being received. An item left in a drop box or even at a third-party location may be delayed in processing, so please allow enough time prior to the due date for the item to be processed.
